WHOIS is the public registry of domains. It shows when a domain was registered, how long it is paid for, which registrar handles it and which DNS servers it uses. It is the first thing to check when assessing an unfamiliar site or looking for a free name.
What the lookup shows
Registration and expiry dates reveal the domain's age — a site registered last week has not earned trust yet. The registrar is the company the domain is held through. NS servers show where DNS records live. Domain statuses show whether transfer protection is on and whether the term has lapsed.
Why owner details are hidden
Since 2018 registrars redact personal data of domain owners in zones covered by European regulation, substituting an anonymised contact. It is not a sign that something is wrong with the domain — it is now the default almost everywhere.

How do I check whether a domain is free?
Enter the name above. If there is no record in the registry, the domain is most likely free and can be registered with any registrar.
Why is there no owner name in the answer?
Personal data is redacted under data-protection rules. You can reach the owner through the registrar's form or the anonymised address in the response.
What does clientTransferProhibited mean?
Transfer protection — a standard setting owners enable so the domain cannot be moved to another registrar without consent. It is not a warning sign.
Why does one domain return data and another does not?
Every zone runs its own WHOIS server and they do not behave alike. Some national zones return reduced data or rate-limit queries.
Collecting domain data?
Bulk lookups from one address hit registry rate limits quickly. Rotating proxies present a new IP on every request.
